A Golden Record
I have always focused my energies on sports. Growing up in northern California, I was high school All-Conference in both baseball and football. And when I was a senior, I threw my first no-hitter and was named Pitcher of the Year. After starring at Arizona State, the Pittsburgh Pirates picked me in the sixth round of the 1988 draft. Five years later, I appeared in a record 65 games for a rookie. After playing with the Mets and Mariners, I became a free agent and signed with Houston.
The "Free-est" Of Agents
Success just wasn't what it was cracked up to be. I didn't have that real peace and confidence I saw in some other players. Win or lose, these pros really had a strong, personal belief in God. One day, I decided to take my doubts directly to God. I just talked to Him, and from that time Jesus Christ became the Lord of my life, instead of baseball.
I still love the game, but now I'm truly a "free agent." My life isn't perfect, but I have the confidence that comes from knowing Jesus is with me, no matter what happens.
A Perfect Father
God loves each of us so much that He gave His one and only son to die for us, knowing that we are not perfect people. That is a God worth believing in! I try to always remember that "whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." (Colossians 3:23) With God by your side, you will always be a winner!
