What A Life
High school and college seemed like something out of a story book. My high school baseball team won three state championships, and I graduated as a Blue Chip All-American. At Pepperdine University, I became a three-year College All-American, and we won the 1992 National Championships. I played on both the Pan-American and US Olympic teams in 1992. That year the Boston Red Sox first drafted me, and then the Detroit Tigers in 1995. I was cruising through the baseball world, but deep down something told me there was more to life.
A Real Player's Coach
At Pepperdine, our coach taught us baseball through the Bible! No kidding. It felt strange at first, but I just couldn't help but be drawn to this guy. He seemed to have found that "something more" in life. I had decided to enroll at Pepperdine mostly because of this coach. During a high school baseball game, my appendix burst and I landed in the hospital. This man I barely knew cared enough to call me and give me encouragement. Later on in college, he really helped me see that ALL my actions said something about me, about my family, about my friends, even about my university. It was his example that taught me it was Jesus Christ who could give me the "something more."
More Than An Athlete
No matter what we do with our lives, whether sports, business, or whatever else, He is with us. I used to feel I had to solve all my problems, fix every trouble. Now I trust the Lord to do all that for me because He cares. We will all make mistakes, but we can relax because God is in control if we let Him be. Whenever I feel scared, frustrated or angry, I remember that in His word He says "those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not grow faint." (Isaiah 40:31).
