I would never have thought that the first step of raising my hand in response to the school daily notice would allow me to be a part of the team that was to dominate Australian Men's Volleyball for over a decade and lead me into the adventure of a lifetime.

To me sport is an important part of my life but it's only one part. If it's important to seek the right coaches and associate with the best in sport, it's even more important to do that in life. I want to win in life. I want my life to be a personal best for me.

One birthday, my brother gave me a Bible and showed me that Jesus had the answers to the tough questions about guilt, fear, purpose, relationships, business and family. As I surveyed the "World Hall of Fame," this one character, Jesus, stood out in history as the Champion of Champions.

As I read the Bible and studied the life of Jesus, I came to realize that until my heart was right towards Him, it would never be right towards myself or others. I was faced with a choice. I could either listen to Jesus or reject what I knew to be true. I could either team up with God or go it alone. In the quietness of my heart, I admitted to God that I fell short of His standard and by faith I accepted for myself God's forgiveness and His gift of eternal life.

From the Bible I also discovered that God is interested in people. He desires the best for us. In John 10:10, Jesus says, "I came so that everyone would have life and have it in its fullest."

I realized that having acceptance and value with God means that my security, value and self-esteem isn't dependent on my winning or success. It has freed me to focus on being my best without the fear of failure.

Many things undermine and cut down our character, self-esteem and hope. Often these are subtle. It could be the news, the economy or a complaining friend, but in the midst of despair and hopelessness, God's intention is to build character, self-esteem, hope and a special relationship with Him. His intention is always for our best.

In response to the first step of accepting God's hand of friendship, extended through Jesus, life has come together in a remarkable way. Champions in sport are champions of the fundamentals. I discovered Jesus offered peace with God and peace with myself.

He dealt with my guilt, sin and fear. When you have completeness, love, confidence and strength within, you have the fundamental ingredients for a life set up to be a personal best.
