I moved to Australia from Egypt when I was 7 years old and started weightlifting at Hawthorn Citizens Youth Club when I was 15. In my time as a weightlifter, I won Australian titles in two weight divisions as well as a silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games In Edmonton, Canada. I was also privileged to break Australian Commonwealth Junior and Senior weightlifting records.

Looking back on the 12 years I spent weightlifting, I realize that I was trying to find meaning and purpose by being involved in that sport. I was searching for all good things like love, peace and joy and not the ultimate and eternal source of all things which is God. Like most people, I had a strong opinion about Jesus Christ and His teachings but hadn't read the New Testament in full as an adult.

I never realized that He was God and offered forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who put their trust in Him.

As I began to read the New Testament, I realized that Jesus was the God I didn't know. Up until then I had prayed to an unknown god. I began to see also that I had broken God's commandments and was therefore a sinner, facing the wages of sin, which is death. I could no longer keep on offending God. I had to turn away from my sins, not because I felt like it, but because He commanded it. I also put my faith in Jesus Christ and what he did through His perfect life, death and resurrection to make me right with God. I finally realized that Jesus came to do what I could never do; He lived a perfect life and died in my place.

Jesus asks us to make Him the ruler of our lives. He made it so clear that you're either for Him (making Him the ruler of your life), or against Him (living life your own way, without Jesus). Jesus said, "if any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross each day and follow me." (Luke 9:23).

I really believe that before forming an opinion of Jesus and what He's all about, you should read the New Testament for yourself and then decide.
